studio 17

Studio17 is a space of research and contamination in dialogue with ancient techniques and traditional materials.

The atelier was founded in 2009 by Caterina Sbrana and Gabriele Mallegni, who met and trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara.

In 2023 was born Dèpendance Studio17, a collateral project that support the art research, a true art factory that collects and promotes the more everyday side of the studio’s production: everyday objects, unique pieces and limited series created by the two artists.

The studio also includes a plaster cast gallery and a molding and restoration of ancient casts laboratory born from the passion, shared by the two artists since they met at the Academy of Fine Art, for the world of models and casts.

The manual skills combined with material knowledge and experimentation make of Studio17 a rare reality in today’s trend towards the dematerialisation of the experience.

Caterina and Gabriele combine different skills and sensibilities in a project of life and work that is unique of its kind: within the atelier each of them carries out his own individual research in visual and plastic arts and together they work on art projects, on commissions for individuals and institutions and they deal with the entire creative process of conceiving and making art objects, from the concept and design, to prototypes, to the final masterpiece.

This website wants to gather all the several facets of their work. From years the two artists have been collaborating and exhibiting with galleries and institutions including: Palazzo Strozzi Foundation, Florence, Plaster Cast Gallery of Ancient Art of the University of Pisa, Museum, Marini Florence, Mall Galleries, London, Montelupo International Ceramics Museum, Florence.
