Karma, karma, karma, karma, karma chameleon you come and go, you come and go loving would be easy if your colors were like my dreams
Red, gold, and green, red, gold, and green, Culture Club, “Karma Chameleon” (1983)
“Karma Chamaleon”, sang the Culture Club in the 80s. The song quickly found international success, becoming part of popular culture. Indeed, the chameleon best represents the spirit of adaptation: its ability to camouflage is transverse, almost instantaneous, and directly perceptible. We now think of natural mimicry, the phenomenon by which certain animal and plant species take on the colors and shapes of the surrounding environment. Or to social mimicry, the phenomenon by which, unconsciously, we end up by adapting our behavior to that of our interlocutors. Mimicry is a protective and defensive process whose goal is to ensure the highest probability of evolution: but at what cost?
