Parola d’artista-intervista a Caterina Sbrana

Caterina Sbrana in her studio
You can find the interview of Gabriele Landi to Caterina Sbrana on Parola d’Artista,an immaterial place dedicated to artistic research. Gabriele Landi: Hi Caterina, has your work always been based on assemblage or is it an operating mode that you have recently adopted? Caterina Sbrana: Hi Gabriele, the latest works arise from my encounter with ceramic, I’ve started using and working since 2014. I exhibited the first prototypes of these cycles at Studio Gennai in 2018. I would say that they are false assemblages, seeming assemblages. They look like combinations of different materials or objects but they are made of one and only material, that is ceramic, this primordial material in these works represents itself but also the other by itself, imitates other materials and textures. I am thinking about the series of work “Self-similarity” in which some everyday objects are recaptured by natural shapes and textures, loosing their original appearance and function they become the theater of the never pacified relationship between man and nature. They are disturbing objects that come from a lost world and already belong to another world, to a new, very ancient aesthetic that combines the natural shapeless and the trace of human work. Within these works I resemble the sixteenth-century ceramics of De Palissy, admired in Paris just before the lock down, the tales of Ballard and the Metamorphoses of Ovid, I don’t know in what order. The mimetic ability of ceramics interests me very much, there is a part of research on the technique of the material, on the study of patinas and surfaces that often leads me to new visions and works. For this reason, but not only for this, I have always been linked to manual, “artisanal” laboratory… https://www.facebook.com/page/378632316189805/search/?q=caterina%20sbrana%20intervista
