Spolveri (sinopie)

One of my favorite museums in Pisa is the Museum of the Sinopie: the traces, the structure of the frescoes deposited on the wall. Sometimes I think about how much these traces have also been stratified in my work, in the maps dotted with the signs of the capsules, for example. The Spolvero technique is used as to transfer preparatory drawings on to various surfaces, on canvases, and also on ceramics.  I presented the first two ceramic “spolvero” at the artistic residency Studio, La Portineria, Firenze, in 2021. In these last years I have been using this technique as a revealed trace on ceramics, fixed by firing on the ceramic surfaces of some small casts of linen canvases while the fabric has been imitated by painting the ceramic casts with engobe.
